Modular, enclosed or open switch-disconnector?
Modular isolators clip onto DIN rail inside a distribution board, as a main switch or to isolate a section. Enclosed isolators arrive ready-built in their own housing with a rotary handle and mount on the wall beside the equipment — the familiar AC unit, water heater and pump isolator. Open switch-disconnectors are panel components, fitted inside a builder's enclosure and operated through a door handle; the larger frames sit here.
What does an IP66 rating mean outdoors?
The two digits describe sealing: the first against solids and dust, the second against water. IP66 describes an enclosure that is dust-tight and protected against powerful water jets, which is why it is the usual grade for a rooftop, balcony or car park isolator here, where sun, blown sand and washdown all work on the housing.
Does the neutral need switching too?
Two- and three-pole units break the live conductors only. TPN and four-pole versions break the neutral as well, which is what gets specified on three-phase machinery and on main switches where the circuit has to be fully dead for maintenance. Match pole count and rating to the equipment nameplate and the board feeding it.
