MCB or MCCB?

An MCB is a miniature breaker on DIN rail with a fixed trip, used for final circuits in homes and light commercial boards. An MCCB is moulded-case: larger, rated far higher, and usually with an adjustable release so one frame covers a band of currents. Past roughly 100A, or where the trip must be tuned to a cable or motor, you are into MCCB territory. Above that sit air circuit breakers such as the ABB Emax, on 1600A and 2500A incomers.

How do I read TMF, TMD and the two numbers?

A code such as TMF 160-1600 describes a thermomagnetic release: the first figure is the continuous current in amps, the second the instantaneous magnetic trip that handles a short circuit. TMD releases let you adjust the thermal setting within a band; TMF is fixed. Ekip LSI and LSIG electronic trip units replace both with adjustable long-time, short-time and instantaneous settings, plus earth-fault on LSIG.

What breaking capacity do I need?

Breaking capacity in kA is the fault current the breaker can interrupt safely, and 25kA is common on sub-mains, with more needed nearer the transformer. It comes from the prospective short-circuit current calculated at that point — design work for a licensed electrical engineer or contractor, never a guess. Tell us the board position and load and we will quote frames and trip units in AED.
