What ampere rating do I need?

The rating follows the circuit, not the appliance. Lighting circuits are typically 6A or 10A; general socket circuits 16A to 20A; a water heater or cooker circuit higher again. If you are replacing a breaker that works, match the existing label exactly — rating, type and pole count. Fitting a larger breaker to stop nuisance tripping is dangerous: the breaker protects the cable, and a higher rating lets the cable overheat before it trips.

Type B, C or D?

The letter is the magnetic trip curve — how quickly the breaker reacts to a surge. Type B trips fastest and suits resistive domestic loads such as lighting and sockets. Type C tolerates the inrush of motors, transformers and fluorescent banks, which is why it is common in commercial boards. Type D allows the highest inrush, for welders and large motors.

Poles and breaking capacity

Single pole for single-phase circuits, two pole where the neutral must also be broken, three or four pole for three-phase. Breaking capacity, quoted in kA, is the largest fault current the device can safely interrupt — it must suit the prospective fault level at the board.
