A cable gland is a fitting that secures a cable where it enters an enclosure, luminaire, motor or distribution board. It grips the cable's outer sheath so mechanical strain is taken by the gland rather than the terminals inside, and it seals the entry against dust and moisture. Glands are made in brass, nickel-plated brass and nylon, and are sized to the cable diameter and to the entry thread, commonly M16, M20 or M25. Armoured cable versions also clamp the steel wire armour and bond it to the enclosure.
