Cable ties, or zip ties, are one-piece nylon straps with a ratchet head: feed the tail through, pull it tight and it will not slide back. They bundle cable behind a rack or a TV, hold a loom to a tray or a frame, and get used for plenty of general fastening that has nothing to do with wiring at all. They are quick, cheap and permanent — a tie is cut off rather than loosened.
What do length and tensile rating mean?
Length sets the largest bundle a tie will close around, so measure the girth of the bundle rather than its diameter. Tensile rating is the pull the tie is built to withstand before it fails, quoted in kilograms or newtons. A heavier bundle, or one that will be lifted or vibrated, wants a wider, higher-rated tie rather than several thin ones.
Does colour matter outdoors?
