A compression cable gland seals and anchors a cable at the point it enters an enclosure by compressing a sealing ring around the outer sheath as the gland body is tightened. The compression action gives a firm mechanical grip, so pull on the cable is resisted by the gland rather than the terminations. These glands are usually specified where a higher ingress protection rating is wanted, or on outdoor and washdown equipment. Correct sizing matters: the cable diameter has to fall inside the gland's stated clamping range for the seal to work.
Sizing and fitting glands on fixed mains wiring is work for a licensed electrician.
