Switches

Shop light switches for UAE homes, villas and hotel fit-outs — 1-gang to 5-gang plates in 1-way, 2-way and intermediate switching, plus water heater, time-delay and curtain switches. Stocked from MK Electric and Schneider Electric.

Which gang and way do I need?

Gang is how many separate switches sit on one plate, so a 2-gang plate controls two lights from one position. Way is how many positions control the same light. 1-way is a single switch point and covers most rooms. 2-way switches the same light from two places — the top and bottom of a staircase — and needs a 2-way switch at each end. Intermediate switches sit between two 2-ways when you want three or more control points along a corridor. A 2-way switch can be wired as 1-way, so it is the safer buy if you are unsure.

What do 10AX, 16A and 20AX mean?

AX is the rating used for lighting loads. 10AX suits ordinary room lighting; 16AX and 20AX handle heavier circuits and longer runs of fittings. Separately, a 20A double pole switch is the usual choice for a water heater and 45A double pole for a cooker or shower, because double pole breaks live and neutral together.

Can I swap brands on the same back box?

Usually, yes. Check the back box before ordering: plate sizes follow the standard UK gangs, but module depth varies between brands and a deeper switch can foul a shallow box. Isolate the circuit before removing anything, and leave new circuits or altered wiring to a licensed electrician.
