Cable tray is a metal or GRP support system that carries groups of cables along ceilings, risers, plant rooms and service corridors. Instead of clipping each cable separately, the tray provides a continuous route that spreads the load, keeps runs tidy and accessible, and allows air to circulate around the cables. Perforated and ladder types are the most common; return-flange and solid-bottom versions are used where extra rigidity or protection is wanted. Trays are matched with bends, tees and support brackets to build a full route, and width is chosen from the number and diameter of cables carried.
Designing, installing and earthing a tray route is work for a licensed electrician.
