Category 6 is a twisted-pair cabling specification for wired Ethernet networks, used for structured cabling in offices and homes and for point-to-point runs between a router, switch, access point or desk. The four twisted pairs and tighter manufacturing tolerances give it more headroom against crosstalk than Cat5e, which is what allows higher data rates over a full-length channel. Solid-conductor cable is intended for permanent runs terminated at patch panels and outlets; stranded cable is more flexible and is used for patch leads. U/UTP is the usual indoor choice, while shielded types are used where a run passes close to electrical interference.
