Switched Sockets

Shop 13A switched socket outlets for UAE homes, offices and hotel rooms — 1-gang and 2-gang, single pole and double pole, with neon indicators, USB charging or a plain rocker, from MK Electric and Schneider Electric.

Single pole or double pole?

Single pole (SP) breaks the live conductor only and is fine for general room sockets. Double pole (DP) breaks live and neutral together, fully isolating whatever is plugged in — the sensible choice for kitchen appliances and anything left permanently connected, and the usual specification on commercial fit-outs. A neon indicator simply shows the switch is on, which is useful behind furniture.

13A square pin or round pin?

The UAE follows the British standard, so the everyday outlet is the 13A BS1363 three-pin rectangular socket. Older villas often have round-pin BS546 outlets — 15A for heavier fixed loads, 5A for lamp circuits — and both are stocked, so you can replace like for like instead of rewiring.

Is a USB socket worth it?

Built-in USB removes the adaptor at bedsides and desks. Judge it on total output rather than port count: a 21W USB-A and USB-C module charges a phone quickly, while older twin USB-A modules are slower. USB versions are deeper than a plain socket, so confirm your back box has the depth before ordering. Swapping a socket on an existing circuit with the supply isolated is within reach of a competent DIYer; adding a new socket position or spurring off an existing circuit is work for a licensed electrician.
